The concept of garnished wages isn’t new. The government is constantly garnishing wages for things like child support, back taxes, unpaid medical bills, etc. People have become so accustomed to the idea of garnished wages, that they automatically assume that we, as a bail bonds agency, can do the same thing.
The simple answer is yes and no.
When you first come to us and ask for help with your bail situation, we can’t automatically garnish your wages. What we will do is ask for a record of your employment, if you are gainfully employed, we’ll often agree to work with you and won’t require a co-signer.
Why?
There are a few reasons. The first is your employment shows that you have ties to the community and responsibilities you care about. These are the type of things that help convince us that you’re a good risk.
The second reason we’re willing to take a chance on people who are employed actually leads us back to the original question about wage garnishment. If you do skip bail and we’re unable to persuade you to return to court, we can eventually file a civil suit against you. If we win, one of the things the court does is arrange to have your wages garnished until your bill is paid in full. We’re happy to report that this rarely happens.
